Morning: Pastries and Pages
Thursday in August means heat, crowds at the beaches, and a good excuse to start early. Begin at Sugar and Scribe before 8:30 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line that forms by nine. Order the almond or the ham and cheese, grab an iced coffee, and sit outside if you can. Skip the avocado toast: it is fine, but you are here for the pastry work.
Walk it off with a visit to D G Wills Books on Girard Avenue. This is not a browsing shop, it is a hunting shop. The stacks are feral, the organization is personal, and the owner knows what is on every shelf. Give yourself thirty minutes and leave with something you did not know you wanted. Go before 11 a.m. when the shop is quiet and the light is still soft through the windows.
Lunch and a Bluff Walk
By noon, head to The Taco Stand for al pastor or Baja fish. The tortillas are steamed to order, the salsas are sharp, and the line moves fast. Eat at the counter or take it to go. Skip the quesadillas: they are fine but forgettable when the tacos are this good.
Spend the afternoon at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. August afternoons are hot, so bring water and stick to the Guy Fleming Trail or the Beach Trail if you want shade and a shorter loop. The reserve smells of resin and salt, and the views over the Pacific are worth the sweat. Go after 3 p.m. when the worst of the heat has passed and the light starts to soften.
Sunset and Dinner
Finish at Georges at the Cove for sunset. The Ocean Terrace is the move: order the fish tacos or the tuna poke, sit outside, and watch the gulls work the cliffs. The dining room downstairs is excellent but formal. Tonight, stay upstairs where the breeze is cool and the view does all the talking. Reservations help, but the terrace often has walk-in space if you arrive before six.
