Morning: Wayfarer and the Cove
Get to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry before 8:30 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and gone by mid-morning. Grab a pain au chocolat and an Americano, then walk the five minutes down to La Jolla Cove. September surf is calmer, the sea lions are loud and unbothered, and the turquoise water sits like glass in the sandstone bowl. Stay twenty minutes, no more. The real move is to keep walking north along Coast Boulevard, where the cliffs open up and the tourists thin out.
Midday: Books and Lunch
By 11 a.m., head to D.G. Wills Books on Girard Avenue. This is a feral, floor-to-ceiling maze of used and rare titles that smells like old paper and sea air. Spend an hour. Browse the poetry wall, the Americana section, the signed first editions stacked like contraband. For lunch, walk two blocks to The Taco Stand. The al pastor is the correct order: charred, oily, and served on steamed tortillas with nothing you don't need. Skip the Baja fish unless you are very hungry. Eat standing, then leave.
Late Afternoon: Torrey Pines or a Drink
If you want air and effort, drive ten minutes north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. The Guy Fleming Trail is short, shaded by twisted pines, and delivers ocean views without the drama of a full hike. If you would rather stay in the village, post up at Public House La Jolla around 4 p.m. for a beer and pretzel on the patio. The noise is good, the staff is fast, and you will be ready for dinner by six.
Dinner: Eddie V's
Eddie V's Prime Seafood is where you finish a Thursday well. The center-cut steak arrives with a thin char and a mouthfeel that justifies the check. Order it medium-rare, pair it with the lobster tail if you are feeling theatrical, and do not skip the martini. The room hums with low conversation and live jazz. You will leave full, slightly lighter in the wallet, and convinced you made the right call.
