August Monday in La Jolla: Coffee, Cove, and a Proper Dinner

A practical Monday guide for La Jolla: start at Bird Rock Coffee, hit the Cove before the crowds, browse D.G. Wills, and finish with sushi at Himitsu.

Start Early, Beat the Heat

Monday in August means La Jolla is quieter than the weekend but still warm and crowded by noon. Start early, claim your beach time before the parking lots fill, and save the serious eating for after the sun drops.

Morning: Coffee and the Cove

Begin at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters on La Jolla Boulevard by 7:30 a.m. The baristas here treat espresso like a craft, and the benches outside catch morning light without the midday glare. Order a cortado and a pastry, then drive straight to La Jolla Cove.

Park near Coast Boulevard before 8:30 a.m. or you will circle for twenty minutes. The Cove is glass-calm in the morning, turquoise water framed by honey-colored sandstone and a chorus of sea lions that sounds like a broken accordion. Walk the coastal path toward the Children's Pool, but skip the crowds and double back. You are here for the view and the salt air, not the selfie line.

Midday: Books and Lunch

By 11 a.m., retreat from the heat. Walk to D.G. Wills Books on Girard Avenue, a feral, floor-to-ceiling maze that smells of old paper and sea air. Spend thirty minutes browsing the Americana section or whatever catches your eye. This is not a place to rush.

Lunch at The Taco Stand on Pearl Street. The al pastor twirls on a vertical spit, orange oil sizzling as it chars. Order two tacos, add the Baja fish if you are hungry, and eat at the counter. It is fast, cheap, and better than most sit-down spots in the village.

Evening: Sushi and Silence

Dinner is at Himitsu, the eight-seat sushi counter that feels private even when full. Reservations are essential. Chef Mitsu runs the bar with theatrical precision: fish arrives glistening, rice is warm and loosely packed, and the room stays quiet enough to hear the knife work. Omakase is the only way to go. Expect to spend two hours and leave satisfied but not stuffed.
