Sunday in La Jolla: Breakfast, Books, and a Bluff Walk

A practical Sunday plan: start with pastries at Wayfarer, browse D.G. Wills Books, walk Torrey Pines Reserve, and finish with sunset at Georges at the Cove.

Start Slow, End with a View

Sunday in La Jolla means starting slow and ending with a view. Fall weather makes this the best season to walk the bluffs without the summer crowds, and today's plan takes advantage of cooler mornings and long afternoon light. Skip the beach: save that for a weekday. Today is about pastry, pages, and a proper clifftop hike.

Morning: Wayfarer and D.G. Wills

Begin at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry before 9 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the early alarm. Grab a pain au chocolat and an Americano, then walk two blocks north to D.G. Wills Books. This feral, Americana-painted bookstore opens at 10 a.m. on Sundays, so time it right. Spend an hour in the stacks. The maze of floor-to-ceiling shelves rewards patience, and the selection skews literary and strange in the best way.

Midday: Torrey Pines Reserve

Drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve by 11 a.m. Fall means the trails are less punishing, and the wind off the Pacific keeps you honest. Take the Guy Fleming Trail for a quick loop or commit to the Beach Trail if you want sand and solitude. The reserve closes at sunset, so plan accordingly. Bring water. Skip the visitor center unless you need a map.

Late Afternoon: Georges at the Cove

Return to La Jolla by 5 p.m. and head straight to Georges at the Cove. Request a table on Ocean Terrace, the rooftop level. Order the tuna tartare and whatever fish the kitchen is running that day. The sunset here is not subtle: gulls, salt air, and the Pacific turning copper and violet. Stay through the last light. This is the meal that justifies the day.
