Morning Conditions: Cool and Clear
Monday morning in La Jolla arrives with 68°F air, partly cloudy skies, and a northwest wind at 10 mph that keeps the heat off your back. The surf is small, 2.3 feet at seven-second intervals, so skip the board and walk instead. Water temperature is 72.9°F, warm enough for a dip if you're brave, but this is a day built for eating and wandering, not paddling out.
Start at Wayfarer, Then Walk the Cove
Get to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry early, before the croissants vanish. The thin, shatteringly crisp layers are worth the line. Grab an almond croissant and a cortado, then walk south toward La Jolla Cove. The partly cloudy sky means good light without glare, and the seals will be loud and visible on the rocks. Spend twenty minutes watching them argue, then loop back through the village.
Lunch at El Pescador, Books at D G Wills
By noon, head to El Pescador Fish Market for lunch. The fish tacos arrive charred and smoking, and the ceviche is cold, sharp, and exactly what a warm July Monday needs. Eat at the counter, then walk two blocks to D G Wills Books. This is a feral, floor-to-ceiling bookstore that smells like old paper and sea air. Spend an hour here. The owner knows what you need before you do.
Afternoon Shade, Evening Oysters
The afternoon will warm up, so find shade or head back to your hotel. By 5:30 p.m., make your way to Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters. Sit on the back patio, order a dozen oysters shucked to order, and let the wood smoke and salt do the work. The northwest wind will keep the evening cool. Stay for the grilled fish if you're hungry. Skip dessert and walk the village one more time before the light fades.
