Start at the Cove Before the Crowds
Thursday in late August means summer crowds are still thick but the light is starting to soften. Start early at La Jolla Cove before the tour buses arrive. By 8 a.m. the turquoise water is still glassy, sea lions are draped on the rocks, and you can actually hear the waves instead of the chatter. Walk the perimeter, take the stairs down to the small beach if you want cold feet, then leave before the parking lot fills.
Breakfast with a Patio Breeze
Head to The Cottage by 9 a.m. The white picket fence patio fills fast, but mornings here smell of salt and bacon fat, and the scrambles arrive with actual care. Order the lemon ricotta pancakes if you want something that tastes like sunlight, or go savory with the breakfast burrito. Skip the mimosa: the coffee is better and you have a long day ahead.
Midday at Puesto
By noon, retreat to Puesto La Jolla for lunch. The brick dining room hums with energy, and the tacos arrive with a bright slap of flavor: crispy melted cheese, charred octopus, or slow-braised short rib. Order the guacamole made tableside and a margarita if the heat is getting to you. The room is loud in a good way, and the air conditioning is a mercy after a morning in the sun.
Afternoon Wander and Sunset Climb
Spend the afternoon at Kellogg Park near La Jolla Shores if you want sand and low stakes, or duck into D G Wills Books if you need shade and the smell of old paper. By 6 p.m., drive up to Mount Soledad Memorial Park. The viewing circle catches late sun, the cross dominates the skyline, and the city spreads below in every direction. Stay until the light goes pink, then head back down before the tourists clog the narrow road.
