Saturday in La Jolla: Coffee, Cove, and a Proper Dinner

A practical Saturday plan for La Jolla: start with pastries at Wayfarer, walk the Cove, lunch at The Taco Stand, and finish with sushi at Himitsu.

Morning: Pastry and the Cove

Saturday mornings in late August belong to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry. Get there early, before the croissants run out. The almond croissant is worth the line, and the coffee is strong enough to carry you through the next two hours. Eat outside if you can: the sun is warm but not punishing yet, and you will want to linger.

Walk it off at La Jolla Cove by 9:30. The sea lions are already draped on the rocks, barking and sunning themselves. The water is turquoise and still, and the sandstone cliffs catch the morning light in a way that makes every tourist photo look better than it should. Stay on the upper path if you want the view without the crowd. Skip the gift shops.

Lunch and Afternoon

By noon, head to The Taco Stand for al pastor. The pork twirls on the spit behind glass, charred and glistening. Order at the counter, grab a table outside, and do not skip the Baja fish. It is fried clean and comes with cabbage that still has snap. This is not a long lunch: you eat, you pay, you leave satisfied.

Spend the afternoon at La Jolla Shores Beach. The sand is wide and forgiving, the water is calm, and families set up camp with umbrellas and coolers. Swim if the mood strikes. If not, walk the shoreline and let the Pacific do the work. By 4 p.m., the light starts to soften and the crowds thin. That is your cue to leave.

Dinner

Dinner is at Himitsu, and you need a reservation. The eight-seat sushi counter is theatrical in the best way: sharp knives, precise hands, fish that tastes like the ocean it came from. Order omakase and let the chef lead. Each piece arrives with intention, and the room stays quiet enough to hear the rice settle. This is not a casual meal. It is the reason you skipped the heavy lunch.
