October Mondays, Done Right
October Mondays in La Jolla are a gift. The weekend crush has cleared, the marine layer burns off early, and you get the town back to something like its working rhythm. Today's plan is simple: eat well, browse slowly, and spend the afternoon on the one beach where you won't feel like you're performing for an audience.
Start at Sugar and Scribe
Get to Sugar and Scribe by 8:30 a.m. The line forms fast, but it moves, and the pastries are worth the wait. Order the almond croissant, browned butter still warm, and a proper espresso. Sit outside if you can: the patio catches morning sun without the glare. Skip the full breakfast menu unless you have time to burn. The baked goods are the real show here.
Browse D.G. Wills Books
Walk off breakfast with a stop at D.G. Wills Books on Girard. This is not a tidy bookstore. It is a feral, floor-to-ceiling maze of used titles, Americana, and the kind of obscure poetry collections that make you feel smarter just holding them. Go slow. Let yourself get lost. If you are looking for bestsellers or clean shelving, this is not your place. If you want to find something you did not know you needed, stay awhile.
Claim Your Spot at La Jolla Shores
By 11 a.m., head to La Jolla Shores Beach. Park near Kellogg Park if you can: it is steps from the sand and has the smell of salt and sunscreen baked into the grass. The beach is wide, forgiving, and far less theatrical than the Cove. Mornings are glassy here in fall, the water calm enough for a long swim or a paddle. Bring a towel, skip the umbrella rental, and settle in. The afternoon will be warmer, but the crowds stay manageable on Mondays.
Late Lunch at The Taco Stand
When the sun gets heavy, walk up to The Taco Stand. The al pastor spins behind glass, orange oil sizzling, and the Baja fish is battered to order. Eat outside. The plates are messy in the best way, and you will want napkins. This is not a long lunch. It is fuel, done right, at a price that will not punish you.
