Thursday in La Jolla: Breakfast, Books, and a Beach Walk Before Sunset

A practical Thursday guide for La Jolla: start with pastries at Wayfarer, browse D.G. Wills Books, walk La Jolla Shores, and finish with sushi at Himitsu.

Start Early, End with Dinner

Thursday in late October means fall light without the crowds. The marine layer usually burns off by ten, leaving you with warm afternoons and long shadows. Start early, end with dinner, and skip the tourist traps in between.

Morning: Wayfarer and the Bookstore

Get to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry when it opens. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line that forms by nine. Grab a table outside if you can, order the almond croissant and a cortado, and watch the village wake up.

Walk it off at D.G. Wills Books, a few blocks away. This is not a browsing shop, it is a commitment. Floor-to-ceiling stacks, no order you will recognize, and the kind of titles that make you wonder who else has been here. Give it thirty minutes or two hours. The owner does not care either way.

Midday: La Jolla Shores

By eleven, head to La Jolla Shores Beach. Park at Kellogg Park if you can find a spot, otherwise use the pay lot on Camino del Oro. The sand is wide and forgiving, the water calm enough for a swim if the fall air has not chilled you yet. Walk north toward the cliffs or sit and do nothing. Both are correct.

Skip lunch at the beach shacks. They are fine, but you are saving your appetite.

Evening: Himitsu

Dinner is at Himitsu, the eight-seat sushi counter that does not take walk-ins lightly. If you planned ahead and booked, you are in for omakase that is sharp, precise, and theatrical in the way good sushi should be. If you did not book, try your luck at the bar early, around five-thirty, and see if they can squeeze you in.

After dinner, walk Prospect Street as the light drops. The village empties out by seven on Thursdays, and the quiet is worth the extra ten minutes.
