Morning: Pastries and Pages
Sunday in early fall means softer light and cooler mornings, the kind of weather that makes you want to linger outdoors before the afternoon sun gets serious. Start at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry around 8 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the wait. Grab a coffee and sit outside if you can. Skip the lunch menu here: this is a bakery first, and that is where it shines.
Walk off breakfast with a stop at D.G. Wills Books on Girard Avenue. The shop is a maze of floor-to-ceiling shelves, feral and wonderful, the kind of place where you lose twenty minutes without trying. Browse the poetry section or the local history corner, then head north.
Late Morning: Torrey Pines
By 10 a.m., drive to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. September mornings are still cool enough to hike without suffering. Take the Guy Fleming Trail: it is short, shaded by rare pines, and delivers ocean views without the full cliff exposure of the longer routes. Bring water. The reserve gets hot by noon, so finish before then.
Lunch and Afternoon
Head back toward La Jolla Shores and stop at The Taco Stand for lunch. The al pastor is the move: charred, oily, and served on tortillas that are steamed to order. Eat outside and watch the foot traffic. It is casual, fast, and exactly what you want after a morning hike.
Spend the afternoon at La Jolla Shores Beach. The sand is wide and forgiving, the water calm enough for a swim. Families cluster near Kellogg Park, but you can find quiet stretches if you walk south. Stay until the light starts to soften, around 5 p.m.
Dinner
Finish at Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters. The back patio is the best seat in the house: wood smoke, cold oysters, and a menu that takes grilling seriously. Order the oysters first, then whatever is coming off the coals. The room fills up by 7 p.m., so arrive early or expect to wait.
