Morning: Coffee and Cliffs
September first is a Tuesday in early fall, which means La Jolla still carries summer heat but the crowds have thinned. Start at La Colombe Coffee in UTC before 8 a.m. The draft latte arrives under a trembling dome of foam, cold and precise. Skip the pastries here: they are fine but not the point.
By 9 a.m., drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Fall mornings are cooler but still warm by midday, so go early. The Guy Fleming Trail is short and delivers ocean views without the full sweat of the Beach Trail. Wind, salt, and resin: the Torrey pines cling to sandstone like stubborn punctuation marks. You will see the Pacific from every angle, and if you are lucky, a hawk circling the bluff.
Lunch and Afternoon
Leave the reserve by 11 a.m. and head to The Taco Stand on Girard Avenue. Al pastor twirls on a vertical spit behind glass, orange oil sizzling as it chars. Order the al pastor taco and the Baja fish. Eat standing or take it to Kellogg Park, a small green slice near La Jolla Shores that smells of salt and sunscreen.
After lunch, walk down to La Jolla Shores Beach. The wide, forgiving strand of sand is quiet on a Tuesday afternoon. Mornings are glassy here, but by 2 p.m. the light is sharp and the water is warm enough to wade. Skip the kayak rentals unless you have two hours to burn. Instead, walk the shoreline or sit and read.
Dinner
Dinner is at Himitsu, the small, sharp-edged sushi counter tucked into La Jolla. Reserve ahead: the eight-seat bar is theatrical and fills fast. The omakase is the only way to go. Chef works with precision, and the fish is cold, clean, and honest. You will leave full and quiet, which is the correct state for a Tuesday night in fall.
