The Last Monday of Summer
August 31st is the last Monday of summer, and La Jolla knows it. The crowds thin as school starts elsewhere, but the light stays long and the water is still warm enough to make you linger. Start early, finish late, and claim the day before fall arrives.
Morning: Coffee and the Cove
Begin at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters on La Jolla Boulevard by 7:30 a.m. The baristas here treat espresso like a conversation worth having, and the benches outside catch morning sun without the midday glare. Order the cortado, sit outside, and let the salt air wake you up properly.
Walk down to La Jolla Cove by 8:30 a.m. before the tour buses arrive. The sea lions are loudest in the morning, draped on the rocks like they own the place. The turquoise water sits calm in late summer, and you can actually hear the gulls over the crowd noise. Stay fifteen minutes, no more. You will be back at sunset.
Midday: Tacos and Torrey Pines
Hit The Taco Stand for lunch around noon. The al pastor sizzles on the spit, and the Baja fish is fried to order. Eat outside if you can stand the heat. Skip the line by arriving before 12:15 p.m., or accept the wait as penance for good tortillas.
Drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve by 1:30 p.m. The trails are exposed, so bring water and a hat. The Guy Fleming Trail is short and shaded by the pines, and the views over the Pacific are worth the dust on your shoes. Late summer means dry grass and clear sight lines all the way to the horizon.
Evening: Sunset at Georges
Reserve a table at Georges at the Cove for 6:30 p.m. and ask for a window seat on the Ocean Terrace. The sun drops into the Pacific around 7:15 p.m. this time of year, and the room fills with that bruised, golden light that makes everyone look better. Order the tuna tartare and whatever fish they are grilling that night. Stay through dessert. Summer ends tomorrow.
