Morning: Pastry and Pages
Friday mornings in late August belong to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry. Arrive before 9:00 a.m. and the croissants are still warm, thin and shattering with each bite. Order the almond croissant and a cortado, then sit outside where the sun is still forgiving. Skip the lunch menu here: Wayfarer is a breakfast operation, and it knows its lane.
Walk off the butter with a visit to D G Wills Books on Girard Avenue. This is not a browsing shop for the impatient. The stacks are feral, the aisles narrow, and the selection leans literary and political. Give it thirty minutes. If you find nothing, you were not looking hard enough. If you find three things, you were paying attention.
Lunch and Afternoon
By noon, head to The Taco Stand for al pastor. The spit turns behind glass, the tortillas are steamed to order, and the Baja fish batter is light enough to forgive. Order at the counter, eat outside, and do not overthink it. This is the best taco you will have today, possibly this week.
Spend the afternoon at La Jolla Cove. Late summer means the water is warm, the sea lions are loud, and the tourists are everywhere. Go anyway. The turquoise bowl of water against honey sandstone does not get old, even when crowded. If you want solitude, skip the main viewing area and walk south along the coastal trail toward the Children's Pool. The light softens after 4:00 p.m., and the crowds thin.
Sunset
Finish at Duke's La Jolla on Prospect Street. Arrive by 6:30 p.m., claim a table on the terrace, and order a mai tai or something cold with rum. The kitchen serves decent fish and reliable poke, but you are here for the view: the Pacific going pink and gold as the sun drops. Conversations slow down, the gulls settle, and the day ends the way a Friday in August should: warm, salty, and without urgency.
