Thursday in La Jolla: Breakfast, Books, and a Long Summer Sunset

A practical Thursday plan for La Jolla: start with pastries at Wayfarer, browse D.G. Wills Books, lunch at The Taco Stand, and end at La Jolla Cove.

Start Early, Stay Cool

Thursday in late July means long light and warm air that holds until well past dinner. Start early to beat the crowds, eat well, and save the coast for when the sun starts its slow drop toward the Pacific.

Morning: Pastry and Pages

Get to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry by 8:00 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line that forms by 8:30. Order a plain butter croissant and an almond if you are hungry. Eat outside if you can: the morning is still cool enough to enjoy it.

Walk it off with a visit to D.G. Wills Books on Girard Avenue. This is a feral, floor-to-ceiling maze of used and rare titles that rewards slow browsing. The Americana paint job and the sheer density of shelves make it feel like a library that escaped into the wild. Go without a plan and leave with something you did not know you wanted.

Lunch: Tacos, Done Right

By noon, head to The Taco Stand. The al pastor spins on a vertical spit behind glass, orange oil sizzling as it chars. Order two al pastor tacos and one Baja fish. The tortillas are steamed and stacked, the fish batter is light and crisp, and the whole operation moves fast. Eat at the counter or take it to go.

Afternoon and Sunset: The Cove

Spend the afternoon however you like, but be at La Jolla Cove by 6:30 p.m. The turquoise water sits like glass in a bowl of honey-colored sandstone, and the sea lions are loud, draped on the rocks like sunburned tourists. The light at this hour is warm and forgiving. Stay through sunset, which in late July happens around 7:50 p.m.

If you want a drink after, walk up to The Whaling Bar inside La Valencia Hotel. It is elegant, slightly salty, and the kind of place that fits better on some nights than others. Tonight, with the summer heat finally breaking, it will fit just fine.
