July 22: Breakfast Pastries, Cliff-Top Trails, and a Sunset Dinner by the Water

Start with croissants at Wayfarer, hike Torrey Pines before the heat peaks, cool off at La Jolla Shores, and finish with ocean-view dinner at Georges at the Cove.

Morning: Pastry and a Cliff Walk

Wednesday in late July means full summer heat and long light. Start early to beat the crowds and the midday sun, then shift to water and shade by noon. Begin at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry before 8:30 a.m. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line. Grab an almond croissant and a cortado, then head north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

Park at the main lot and take the Guy Fleming Trail: it's short, shaded by pines, and delivers ocean views without the full exposure of the beach trail. You'll be done by 10 a.m., before the heat turns punishing.

Midday: Sand and Swim

Drive back to La Jolla Shores Beach and claim a spot near Kellogg Park. The sand is wide, the water is forgiving, and the park has shade and picnic tables if you need a break. Swim, nap, read. Stay until you're hungry, then walk to The Taco Stand on Pearl Street. The al pastor is the correct order: charred, oily, and served on a double tortilla that actually holds together.

Evening: Sunset Dinner Above the Cove

Make a reservation at Georges at the Cove for 6:30 p.m. or later. Ask for a table on the Ocean Terrace if the weather holds. The menu leans Californian and confident: order the fish, whatever it is, and let the view do the rest. Gulls will argue outside the window, the light will go gold then violet, and you'll leave smelling faintly of salt and expensive wine.

Skip dessert here and walk to Sugar and Scribe for a slice of cake if you're still hungry. Tonight, the Pacific will be warm and the sunset tables will fill fast.
