Sunday in La Jolla: Breakfast, Bluffs, and a Long Dinner by the Water

A practical Sunday plan for July 19: start with pastries at Wayfarer, hike Torrey Pines before the heat, cool off at La Jolla Shores, and finish with sushi at Himitsu.

Morning: Pastries and a Hike Before the Heat

Sunday in summer La Jolla means getting out early before the sun turns the coast into a griddle. Start at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry when it opens. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line that forms by 8:30. Grab an almond croissant and a cortado, sit outside if you can, and let the morning settle in before the crowds arrive.

By 9:00, drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. July heat builds fast, so take the Guy Fleming Trail: it's short, shaded in spots, and delivers ocean views without the punishment of the longer routes. The reserve smells of resin and salt, and the pines cling to sandstone like they're daring gravity. Finish by 11:00, before the parking lot turns into a negotiation.

Midday: Cool Off at the Shores

Head to La Jolla Shores Beach by noon. The sand is wide, forgiving, and filled with families who know what they're doing. Rent a kayak if you want to work, or just plant yourself near the lifeguard tower and let the Pacific do the talking. The water is cold but honest, and by early afternoon the breeze off the ocean keeps the heat tolerable.

For lunch, walk up to El Pescador Fish Market. It's a no-frills counter where the fish comes straight from the case to the grill. Order the grilled mahi mahi plate or stuff it into a taco. Eat outside, let the char cool, and skip anywhere fancier until dinner.

Evening: Sushi and Sunset Ritual

By 6:00, make your way to Himitsu for an early dinner. This eight-seat sushi counter is theatrical in the best way: precise, sharp-edged, and unapologetically serious about fish. Reservations are essential. Let the chef lead, don't overthink the order, and expect to spend two hours watching someone work.

After dinner, walk down to La Jolla Cove. It's a ten-minute stroll, and by 8:00 the light is golden and low. The sea lions are loud, the sandstone glows, and the tourists thin out just enough to let you stand still and listen. That's your Sunday.
