Start Early, Finish Late
October in La Jolla means cooler mornings and softer light, the kind of fall that still lets you eat outside without a jacket by noon. Thursday is a good day to skip the weekend crowds and claim the coast for yourself. Start early, finish late, and build the day around movement and food that earns its place on the plate.
Morning: Pastry and the Reserve
Get to Wayfarer Bread & Pastry when it opens. The croissants are thin, shatteringly crisp, and worth the line that forms by 8:30. Grab a kouign-amann if they have it, then take your coffee to go.
Drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and park before 9 a.m. The Guy Fleming Trail is short, under two miles, and delivers ocean views without the punishment of a full descent. October means the marine layer burns off early, so you get clean sight lines down the bluffs. Bring water. Skip the beach access today: save your legs.
Lunch: The Fishery
By noon, head to The Fishery on Torrey Pines Road. This is a brick-walled seafood counter that treats fish like it matters. Order the grilled catch, whatever came in that morning, and sit outside if the patio is open. The ceviche is sharp and citrus-forward. Skip the fries: they are fine, but the fish is the point.
Afternoon: Cove and a Book
Walk off lunch at La Jolla Cove. The sea lions are loud, the water is absurdly blue, and the sandstone cliffs catch the October light like a postcard that forgot to exaggerate. Stay twenty minutes, then drive to D G Wills Books on Girard. This feral, floor-to-ceiling shop is perfect for an hour of aimless browsing. Buy something or don't, but let the place breathe around you.
Dinner: Paradisaea
Reserve ahead for Paradisaea on La Jolla Boulevard. Chef Tara Monsod runs a kitchen that refuses to be polite, and the terrace is strung with small bulbs that make every table feel like a dinner party. Start with the crudo, order the pasta, and finish with whatever they are plating for dessert. This is a Thursday night that earns the drive.
