Sunday Morning Pastries, Afternoon Cliffs, and a Proper Dinner in La Jolla

Start with croissants at Wayfarer, hike Torrey Pines before the sun peaks, then settle in for sushi at Himitsu or French at Le Coq. A practical Sunday in La Jolla.

Start with Pastry

Sunday in late September means the marine layer burns off early and the afternoon light turns the cliffs gold. Start at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry before 9 a.m., when the croissants are still warm and the line hasn't yet spilled onto the sidewalk. Order the almond croissant and a cortado, sit outside, and watch the neighborhood wake up. Skip the savory pastries: they're fine, but the laminated dough is what this place does best.

Hike Before the Heat

By 10 a.m., drive north to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Fall means cooler mornings and fewer crowds on the trails. Take the Guy Fleming Trail if you want ocean views without the climb, or commit to the Beach Trail if you're willing to descend sandstone switchbacks to the water. The reserve closes trails in high heat, but today you'll be fine. Bring water, wear a hat, and plan for an hour and a half round trip.

If you skip the reserve, walk Torrey Pines State Beach instead. The sand is wide, the cliffs loom, and you can wade without worrying about riptides or rocks.

Lunch or Late Afternoon

For lunch, head to El Pescador Fish Market on Pearl Street. Order the smoked fish plate or the grilled mahi tacos, eat at a picnic table, and leave room for dinner. If you'd rather sit down with a view, try Caroline's Seaside Cafe by Giuseppe near the Cove. The pasta is solid, the terrace catches the breeze, and you can watch the seals argue on the rocks below.

Dinner with Intention

Tonight, book Himitsu if you want precision and theater at an eight-seat sushi counter, or Le Coq if you're after French technique with a California edge. Both require reservations. Himitsu is quiet, focused, and expensive in the best way. Le Coq is louder, richer, and built for sharing plates. Either way, go hungry and go early: service starts at 5:30 p.m., and the best tables fill fast.
