After lunch, walk down to La Jolla Cove. August means the water is turquoise, the sea lions are loud, and the rocks are crowded with sunbathers and tourists. Go for the view, not the solitude. If you want to swim, the water is calm and clear, but the beach itself is small and fills fast. Stay an hour, then retreat before the afternoon heat peaks.
Late Afternoon and Sunset
Spend the late afternoon at Brick & Bell Cafe, a quiet spot with good iced coffee and a small patio. It's a place to cool down, read, or catch up on work before the evening shift begins.
For sunset, claim a table at Duke's La Jolla by 6:00 p.m. The porch overlooks the Pacific, and the light at this hour is worth the wait for a table. Order a mai tai and the macadamia-crusted fish. The kitchen is reliable, the view is unbeatable, and the crowd is relaxed. Stay through sunset, then walk back to your car as the village cools and the day finally exhales.
